Vagus Nerve

Vagus Nerve (Cranial Nerve X)

The Vagus Nerve is the longest and most complex of the cranial nerves. It runs from the brainstem through the neck and thorax down to the abdomen. In the world of massage therapy, it is often referred to as the “Air Brake” of the body because it is the primary component of the Parasympathetic Nervous System.

Why it Matters for Massage Therapists

When a therapist performs slow, rhythmic strokes (like Effleurage) or gentle neck work near the carotid sinus, they are stimulating the Vagus Nerve. This triggers:

Response Result
Lowered Heart Rate Reduced Anxiety
Reduced Cortisol Improved Healing
Increased HRV Better Stress Resilience

Vagus Nerve and Somatic Release

The Vagus Nerve is the biological “highway” used during Somatic Release. By calming the vagal tone, therapists can help clients move out of a “freeze” state and physically discharge stored trauma from the muscular system.
