Also known as the subcutaneous layer, the hypodermis is the innermost layer of the integumentary system. It consists primarily of adipose tissue (fat) and loose connective tissue. It serves as an insulator to help regulate body temperature and acts as a cushion to protect underlying muscles and bones.
