Somatic Release

Somatic Release (Somatic Bodywork)

Somatic Release is a therapeutic bodywork approach that focuses on the internal physical perception of the body (the “soma”) to identify and discharge stored tension, stress, or trauma. Unlike traditional massage which focuses on manipulating muscle tissue from the “outside-in,” somatic release works from the “inside-out.”

How It Works

The human body often reacts to chronic stress through “holding patterns”—neurological loops where the brain forgets how to relax a muscle. Somatic release aims to:

  • Engage the Vagus Nerve: Shifting the body from “Fight-or-Flight” to “Rest-and-Digest.”
  • Identify Sensory-Motor Amnesia: Helping the client “re-learn” how to feel and move a frozen muscle.
  • Facilitate Unwinding: Allowing the nervous system to perform micro-movements (sighs, tremors) that signal a successful release.

Student Clinical Tip: During a Somatic Release, a client may experience an “emotional release” (shaking or crying). As a therapist, your role is to maintain a safe, quiet container and allow the nervous system to complete its discharge without judgment.
